… As 1 DIV gives PDP 24 hours to retract statements
Kaduna State Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, weekend strongly rejected
results of the recently held local government council elections in the state,
especially areas where the APC was declared winner.
The party in a release signed by State Publicity Secretary, Abraham Alberah
Catoh stated that the decision of the party was borne out of conviction that
the elections conducted peacefully in Polling units with Electronic Voting
Machines, EVM, suddenly changed, and the results were declared for APC, as
the winners in those areas even before results were collated, holding Governor
Nasir el-Rufais', aides, military, police and other government officials
responsible for the irregularities.
In a swift reaction, the 1DIV Nigeria Army, Kaduna, gave PDP 24 hours to
withdraw the statement, saying failure to do so would attract legal action,
describing the allegations as unfounded.
"The Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, Kaduna State Chapter, strongly rejected
the results of the recently held Local Government Council Elections in Kaduna
State in the areas where the APC were declared winner.
"Our decision stems from the fact that, Elections were conducted peacefully in
polling units where the Electronic Voting Machines, EVM, were used but
shortly before the election results were collated, the Special Adviser to the
Governor of Kaduna State, Uba Sani and Mr Samuel Aruwan, the Senior Special
Assistant to the Governor on Media Matters, with the backing of the
Commissioner of Police of Kaduna State, Mr Austin Iwar and the GOC 1
Division, Major General Mohammed Mohammed went round various Local
Government Areas with heavily armed Policemen and Soldiers harassing,
threatening, abducting and bribing Returning Officers.
"The KAD-SIECOM obviously demonstrated its bias and Partisanship by
cancelling the results of Elections held at Kaura, Jaba and Kajuru Local
Government Areas after they realized that the PDP has clearly won the
elections. This was done in connivance with the APC administration in the
State so as to portray the APC as an acceptable party across the State.
The genuine results collated by the SIECOM Ad-hoc Staff with our Party Agents
in all the polling units across the State apparently shows that the PDP won in at
least 21 Local Governments Areas of the State.
"With the conduct of the Security Agencies in the Local Government Elections
in Kaduna State, it is very clear that they have demonstrated unbridled
Partisanship and unprofessionalism. Therefore, we strongly believe that the
present Leadership of the Nigerian Police and the Army in Kaduna State
Government cannot guarantee free, fair and credible Elections in 2019.
"In the light of the above, we call on the Inspector General of the Police and
the Chief of Army Staff to investigate Mr Austin Iwar and Maj. Gen.
Mohammed Mohammed respectively for their partisanship and unprofessional
conduct of their personnel. Likewise, we call for the immediate arrest and
prosecution of Uba Sani, Samuel Aruwan and all the Returning Officers who
abandoned their duty posts to announce fake Results in undisclosed locations
other than the constituted Collation Centres,’’ the PDP stressed.
But the Army in a swift reaction states that a seven-day ultimatum was given
to PDP to issue a retraction, where it accused the General Officer Commanding
1 Division, Major General Mohammed Mohammed of aiding rigging of the local
council polls in the state on May 13, 2018.
The statement signed by the Deputy Director Army Public Relations, Colonel
Muhammad Dole, on Saturday May 19, warned that failure to retract the
statement would attract legal actions.
"In view of the foregoing, Headquarters, 1 Division NA requests the immediate
retraction of this allegation with apology to our gallant officers and men who
are daily paying supreme sacrifice to ensure peaceful atmosphere in Kaduna
“The perpetrators should issue retraction of this unfounded allegation on or
before Saturday 26 May 2018. Otherwise, an appropriate legal action will be
taken against them,” it stated.
