Abia state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has protested the alleged beating of Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose warning that there should not be any police brutality in Ekiti State.
Addressing newsmen yesterday at PDP state secretariat Umuahia after protest March round major streets in the state capital, PDP state Chairman, Sir Johnson Onuigbo decried the maltreatment meted out to the PDP Governor in Ekiti State.
He noted that we are in a civilized country and that both Governors and President have immunities, at such should be accorded respect in accordance with the laws of the land.
Abia state PDP Chairman also pointed out that Police exist to protect lives and properties, wondering the rationale behind the mobilization of over30, 000 police men to Ekiti adjudged a peaceful State.
Onuigbo maintained Police action is uncalled for and geared towards intimidating PDP supporters to succumb to the antics of powers that be.
“We have gathered today in solidarity to what happened in Ekiti State and to condemn in its entirety the action of Nigerian Police on the brutality of the Governor and other innocent citizens of the state.”
The former mayor of Umuahia North posited that you cannot win election by intimidation but by through free, fair and transparent means.
After addressing the newsmen the PDP state Exco in company of Journalists headed to meet with the Commissioner of Police, Anthony Igbizi to hand him over protest letter to the Inspector General of Police
In the said letter dated 12th July, 2018 signed by Sir Johnson Onuigbo and Chief Ibe Nwadioha, PDP State Chairman and Secretary respectively, and made available to Nigeria Pilot the reads in part: “We write to protest and condemned the sordid act of the police attack, brutality, humiliation and dehumanization of our Innocent, peace loving and law abiding party faithful in Ekiti yesterday.”
The protest letter further noticed the attack on the person of Governor Ayo Fayose and his deputy, Professor Kolapo Olusola,t he party’s flag bearer in Saturday governorship election in the state and was touched by the bravado and over-zealousness of police men in executing the sacrilegious degradation of the exalted Governor of a state and a man holding forte the mandate of the party in the state.
They ask if the revered office of the Executive Governor of a state could be so brazenly desecrated in broad daylight, what is the fate of the ordinary citizens of Nigeria in the hand of the sanguinary policemen?
Abia PDP further contends that it is more worrisome that this show of shame took place in a democratic Nigeria of the 21st century, under this democracy which their party has laboured painstakingly to preserve and protect in the past two decades.
They further felt said that Nigeria police which is one of the Security Agencies of the state charged with the protection of lives of Nigerians has allowed itself to degenerate to be used as instrument for perpetuation of autocracy and budding tyranny.
Abia PDP plead with IGP to use his good offices to halt this inexorable match towards the democratic abyss aided by the police, otherwise should anything untoward happen to long nurtured democracy they shall not hesitate to hold the police accountable noting that a stitch in time saves time.
In his response the CP sued for understanding that Police deployment has nothing to do with being sponsored by anyone.
He dispelled rumour that the action of police was politically motivated, adding that the police is there to protect lives and properties and ensured a credible election was conducted.
Meanwhile, the Executive Chairman of Isiala Ngwa North, Hon Ginger Onwusibe stole the show as he mobilized mammoth crowd from his Otawike group to the delight of his colleagues who came alone without their supporters .
