Former Vice Chancellor, Bowen University and current Vice Chancellor, Edwin Clark, University, Kiagbodo, Delta State, Professor Timothy Olagbemiro, has called on the authority of the National Policy on Education in Nigeria to consider the development of a National curriculum framework that would serve as a reference for desirable learning outcomes; a frame work that should encourage educational practices for transformative learning.
He said this during the convocation lecture of Bowen University tagged: A paradox of Nigeria Tertiary Education scheduled to mark this year’s graduation ceremony of the institution.
Professor Olagbemiro, in his lecture, took a critical look at tertiary education in Nigeria to evaluate its problems, success and reaffirm essential factors needed to keep it aglow, declaring that training at the tertiary level is should be specialised in nature that would lead to high level qualifications.
In retrospect, he noted that moral teaching in Nigerian universities were reflected in the lives of students, and Nigeria at that time appeared to be moving forward and assuming positions of responsibilities among comity of nations to the extent that the Nigeria’s workforce was enviable, committed and productive, due to sound adequate and effective curriculum for each cadre of educational levels.
He said for Nigeria to have universities that towers highly and with no tilt tendency, we must make efforts to prepare the students entrepreneurially with creativity, innovation and critical thinking education.
According to him, improvement in quality of tertiary education in Nigeria, requires improvement in leadership endowed with integrity, saying that if we do not want our universities to tilt and collapse we must put seek honest people of character to be at the helm of affair.
“It is regrettable to note that our education is not yet functional because we yet to be politically resolved. One of the ways forward is to continue to ensure our education is functional and relevant to our problems and we should employ our educational experience to revolve around our culture and aspirations.
The Vice Chancellor, Bowen University, Professor Joshua Ogunwole, in his welcome Address stated that Bowen University’s new agenda will give room for critical thinking and problem solving education.
