UYO—Worried by the worsening security situation occasioned by cultism and kidnapping in Etim Ekpo and Ukanafun Local Government areas of Akwa Ibom State, the Police and stakeholders in the state met in Uyo to fashion out ways to tackle the menace.
The participants, in a communiqué at the end of the meeting, observed that violent crimes in the areas have led to loss of lives and properties, and called on the state government to extend an olive branch to repentant cultists and kidnappers.
It read in part: “We call upon the state government to look into the possibility of granting clemency/amnesty to those who are willing to embrace the gesture.”
They called on criminals lay down their arms and give government the opportunity to look into their grievances.
They commended the Police and the state government for their efforts so far and advised them not to relent in their efforts to restore peace and security in all parts of the state.
They called for the establishment of joint patrol /crack teams with proper funding for effective operation and the establishment and proper funding of neighbourhood watch in all the communities, as well as the retraining, equipping and improved funding for the Police and other security operatives.
Among those who spoke at the event were the Commissioner of Police, Adeyemi Ogunjemilusi, and National Legal Adviser to Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Mr. Emmanuel Enoidem.Read Full Story
