WARRI— Warri Study Group has called for harmony among the three ethnic groups of Itsekiri, Isoko and Ijaw in Delta South senatorial district ahead of the senatorial election in 2019.
Chairman of the body, Mr Edward Ekpoko, in a statement, urged the ethnic groups to exhibit maturity, pleading that they should promote peace ahead, during and after the election.
He said: “The Ijaw, Isoko and Itsekiri ethnic nationalities of Delta South of Delta State must work in unity in their choice of candidate for the senatorial seat. Whoever emerges as the winner will ultimately represent the three ethnic nationalities in the Senate.
“That is why we must exhibit maturity and love for one another in the contest, bearing in mind the need for equity and justice. These ideals have gradually become fault lines in our political landscape.
“Delta South is perhaps the single highest producer of oil and gas in Nigeria and accounts for over 70 percent of the revenue that keeps the state running. There is, therefore, need for mutual respect among Ijaw, Isoko and Itsekiri in the senatorial district.
“All hands must be on deck to see that the issue of zoning and rotation is respected so as not to upset the apple cart. It will be delicate and dangerous to do otherwise and can rub off on other elective offices. We must tread cautiously. The road is laden with mines.”
