THE General Manager, Eko Support Logistics Base in Apapa, Mr. Seni Edu, has advocated for a more effective port access control with a view to safety and security within and around the port vicinity.
Speaking at the last monthly meeting of the Port Facility Security Officers, PFSO, Forum in Lagos, Mr. Edu who was represented by Mr. Akin Omole, commended the efforts of the Forum in creating awareness and enhancing security and safety of lives and properties within the Lagos Maritime Security Zone.
He also commended the efforts by port facility owners in ensuring effective access control to the Ports through the Land area but expressed concern on the porous nature of the waterways which gives a leeway for miscreants to access vessels at berth using local boats.
He called on relevant Government Agencies to step up their efforts in ensuring regular patrol of the waterfront noting that collaboration and synergy among the governmental agencies such as the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, the Marine Police, and the Nigerian Navy, would go a long way in enhancing security of the waterfronts.
Similarly, Chairman of the Forum Dr. Ignatius Uche, assured the stakeholders of the effort being made by the group in drawing the attention of relevant government agencies in addressing the challenges.
Uche also said that a position paper has been put together by the Forum for onward transmission to the agencies.
A representative of NIMASA, Engr. Lakopsam Dashel, also commended the efforts of the Forum in ensuring a secure maritime domain for everyone.
Dashel noted that the efforts of the Forum in fostering effective security in Terminals and Facilities which has been recognized by the United States Coast Guards, a development that put the country on a good stead in the area of maritime security.Read Full Story
