PORT HARCOURT— FORMER governor Peter Odili, yesterday, earned a new accolade as ‘Ornament of Rivers State’ as he clocks 70 today.
Former Attorney General of the Federation, Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, decorated Odili with the new title at a public lecture organised by Governor Nyesom Wike’s administration, in Port Harcourt, to kickstart celebration of Odili’s birthday.
Wike, his wife, Justice Eberechi e Nyesom-Wike, Rivers State Executive Council, state judiciary and legislature were among dignitaries who celebrated Odili on the occasion.
Also at the occasion were former Kano State governor, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, former Edo State governor, Lucky Igbinedion, former Kogi State governor, Idris Wada, former Rivers State governor, Sir Celestine Omehia, former President Court of Appeal, Justice Umaru (retd) and former Akwa Ibom Military Governor, Col Bako (retd). joined by mormer Others are Ministers, serving senators, National Assembly members, traditional rulers, professionals and renowned jurists who showered glowing tributes to the former governor.
In the lecture titled, “Sir Dr Peter Odili: Defender of the Faith, Defender of the Fatherland,” Agabi described Odili as an outstanding humanist, courageous and committed to growth of Nigeria.
“Formerly, he belonged to Rivers State. He has ceased to be the property of Rivers State. He is now the property of Nigeria and the world. Whatever he has done is for the benefit of mankind. Whatever he has refrained from doing, it is in the interest of society,” he noted.
In a eulogy, Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, Mr Yinka Odumakin said at 70, Dr Odili and other men of goodwill should stand and work for revival of the country.
Chairman of the occasion, Justice Abdulahi said Odili has created a place for himself in the history of Nigeria.
